Blackmailing the Republican Party

The media is all in a tizzy following a meeting in Salt Lake City last week of a super double-secret conservative society that was graced with a visit from none other than the Prince of Darkness Cheney himself. Word is, there was some super, super secret discussion about the Christian right lunatic fringe going with a third-party presidential candidate (rather than vote for likely Republican candiate Guiliani whom they are openly calling "pro-abortion").

Huh! Who are they kidding?

The New York Times says "Participants in the group that endorsed the resolution said they had reached their position after hearing an assessment of the state of the Republican primary from Mr. (Tony) Perkins, who acts as a point man in Washington for the movement. Mr. Perkins told them that Mr. Giuliani could plausibly win the primary if he carried Florida, which has many conservative Christian voters, and that now was the best chance to stop any momentum behind his campaign."

Now IS the best chance to stop any Giuliani momentum, indeed. Get the Republican Party scared they might lose the support of the Christian wackos, and force him out of the race. Let's not pretend for a second to take seriously the suggestion they might put forward a 3rd-party candidate. They remember Nader. They remember Perot. These smart guys know a 3rd-party presidential candidate is nothing but a spoiler. This swift-boating of Giuliani is about nothing more than arm-twisting in an attempt to control the primaries and the nominating process (UPDATE: remember, that's illegal for a 501(c)3). As I said in the post immediately prior to this, the campaign once again is going to be all about abortion and not about how we care for and provide medical care for the children who are born in this country. Right. Family values.

And if you're wondering just who is in this super, super secret society, the Council for National Policy, here's a link to a membership list I found online (might be a year or so old): Council for National Policy

And by the way, what's the deal with the editor of the Deseret News, Joe Cannon, saying he was attending the CNP Salt Lake meeting as a "journalist" but he would not be reporting on it? In what way was he attending as a journalist? Man, that really is a secret society!

Don't miss the great Guthrie/Seeger video in my post just prior to this.

"...super couble-secret conservative society..."???

You mean the Council for National Policy? The one who has a web site at http://www.policycounsel.org/ that actually has an About button? And links to past speaches?

It is a PRIVATE organization that chooses to exclude the media from most of its events. My Boy Scout Troop excludes the media from most of its events - is it secret too?

Also, "...Prince of Darkness Cheney himself." Demogogery, all of it.

Now, I admit that having Joe Cannon there was strange - why would a journalist (is a newspaper editor a "real" journalist? Are any editorials real journalism?) not report on an event like that? If he was there as a private citizen, he should have said so. Odd.

Nice try, TW. I'll admit to demogoguery, and I'll throw in hyperbole and ad hominem, on the Prince of Darkness comment (as I'm not 100% sure he is). But I won't back down on the secret society.

They are a 501(c)3 tax-exempt PRIVATE organization and legally they cannot support a candidate or lobby. And their web site looks super clean in that regard. But do you think this swift-boating of Guiliani is not intended to affect the outcome of an election?

And where is their official membership list? And how do I join? It's "by invitation only" and membership is unofficially known to be made up of the super rich and the super right-wing (white, male) Christians who frankly are more about making a profit than following any prophet.

So go to their web site and click on their "Contact Us" link. Did you notice there isn't one?

If they are intending to affect public policy, why is there any need for such secrecy? Let the sunshine in.

If it's a group that has the Vice President of the United States attending, and if they tout themselves as a National Policy group, you bet we have a right to know what's going on.

If Satan had a private meeting with Cheney, I'd want to know about it. Who knows what kind of influence these groups have on government.

We've already seen how influenced this administration is by scary fringe groups, like armaggedonists and energy companies, not to mention the military-industrial complex.

Exactly right, Jennifer. We're still waiting to hear the facts about the secret energy junta headed up by Cheney at the start of the Bush administration. Cheney is never more comfortable than when he's conducting the public's business in secret.

I agree with both Jennifer and BekkieAnn. There are a lot of secret things going on behind the scenes that we have a right to know about.

It's interesting how so often government thinks they can plan these things in the dark and then foist them on us suddenly when we haven't had a chance to think about them, much less talk with our congressional representatives about them.

It bugs me how the super-secret, super-elite from both major parties can put up their establishment candidates for president--as though they are our only choices--and then ignore the rest of those who are running.

Giuliani would be a huge mistake as president, but then again, so would Hillary Clinton.

I was with you all the way to that last sentence, Frank. And there we must agree to disagree. I would love to see a Hillary Clinton presidency.

Either Hillary or Obama will get my vote, Satan will catch pneumonia from frostbite when Hell freezes over before I would vote for any R on the horizon, Collin Powell excepted if he were running.

Thanks for the chuckle. I'm with you. It's looking like Hillary right now, but I would support Obama, and for that matter, John Edwards would get my vote as well. I like the options the D's have this time. We'll have a great candidate.
